Mosques in Goa

Jama Masjid

The Masjid is located at Sanguem Taluka 26 kms from Margao. It is another impressive Muslim monument. The present structure was built as late as 1959 AD. It is remarkable for its harmonious proportions and elegant simplicity.
Two elegant turrets surmounted by pillar kiosks flank the entrance façade. But the dome-shaped kiosk rising at the centre of the four minarets of the Masjid adds to the artistic beauty of this monument.

Safa Shahouri Masjid

Located at Ponda, Safa Shahouri Masjid is one of the important & biggest monument left behind by the Muslim rulers. Its greatness lies not in what is left of the one time prosperous religious complex, but its ruins, which vividly summarize the past glory.

Ibrahim Adilshah of Bijapur built the mosque in 1560 AD. The interesting part of the complex is the huge tank with Hammams dotting its four interior sides in Meharab design. The Portuguese destroyed the whole complex when they occupied this part of the state. The tank has since been repaired and restored by the archives. The Mosque and the tank were formerly surrounded by an extensive garden with many fountains.

The two major festivals Id-UI-Fitr and Id-UI-Zuha are celebrated at this mosque with great ritual and are attended by a large number of people.
